MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay Municipality's almost R45m Vaale Vallei Reservoir Project between Hartenbos and Great Brak River was officially completed on 8 May.
The project, which commenced in 2021 and was spread out over three phases, has a capacity of 7 000 000L.
"The Mossel Bay Municipality said the reservoir strengthens the existing water infrastructure network, which already includes dams such as Wolwedans, Klipheuwel, Ernest Robertson and Hartbeeskuil, as well as the desalination plant.
"Collectively, this infrastructure delivers more than 80 million litres of water per day - well above the current consumption levels - enhancing the town's resilience."
The municipality said the project reflected a strategic investment in bulk water infrastructure to accommodate ongoing residential growth and improve service reliability.
"This project represents far more than technical infrastructure. It is a strategic investment in the future of local communities and a clear demonstration of the municipality's long-term commitment to resilient infrastructure development. Since 2022, water security has been identified as a key priority, in alignment with the 2030 Spatial Development Framework."
At the official handover, the municipality's senior manager of water and sanitation, Eric Louw, provided an overview of this multi-year project. Phase 1 entailed establishing storage capacity during the 2020/21 and 2021/22 financial years. Phase 2, extending the water supply to the communities, followed during 2023/24 and 2024/25. During phase 3, in the 2025/26 financial year, the reservoir's operational capacity was enhanced.
