MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Mossel Bay is one step closer to having another must-do box that all adrenaline addicts will have to tick.
The municipality has called for tenders for the development of the much-anticipated zip-line at the iconic Point area.
It is anticipated the zip-line will stretch over the ocean from the cliffs above the lighthouse to the top of the deck of the aquarium at the Point, and that the deck of the aquarium will be used for the zip-line base station.
In addition, a ticket office, shops and franchise restaurant in a pop-up format as well as a tourism hub will be developed on the remainder of the deck while the ground floor of the building will still be used as an aquarium.
The lease for this project will run for nine years and 11 months. The infrastructure development will be for the account of the successful bidder, who will be allowed to sub-let a portion of the property with the appropriate permission granted.
This development will add a one-of-its-kind facility to the existing adventure tourism offering in the area, with as many as 8 000 to 10 000 zip-line users attracted per annum, drawing on the growing extreme adventure tourism market.
It will not operate in competition with any other existing tourism facility and will add direct and indirect job opportunities to the related industry.
The zip-line is deemed to offer a unique sea crossing without impeding on the popular St Blaize walking trail or the surroundings that are due to form part of the heritage status application for the Point area.
After a recent public participation process, council received two proposals for the lease and development of the aquarium and deck on top of the aquarium.
While one proposal centred on an upgrade of the area to form a multi-faceted marine tourist centre, council instead favoured the proposal for the establishment of a zip-line.
