MOSSEL BAY NEWS - It is a popular notion to depict firefights rescuing old ladies’ or little girls’ kitten from trees, but rescuing a young bull from a manhole is no mean feat.
Members of Mossel Bay Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management this afternoon, 24 November, responded to an emergency in Great Brak River where a young bull fell into a manhole filled with water.
The manhole cover was removed and when cattle moved into a yard whilst grazing, the young bull fell and became trapped.
The SPCA was alerted and called Mossel Bay Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management Services to assist. A rope was fixed around the bull’s neck to keep its head above water.
Other rope techniques were used during the rescue effort to save the animal. After a struggle of almost an hour, involving efforts from community members, the SPCA and firefighters Ricky du Preez and Quintin Esau, the young bull was rescued from the manhole.
Firefighter Du Preez commented that by the time they left the scene, the young bull was strong as ever.
