Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Mossel Bay Mayor, Harry Levendal, met with a representative group of the protesters who burned tyres in the town early this morning, on Monday, 24 May, to determine what gave rise to the incident.
The mayor was accompanied by the ward councillor for the area, Councillor Welcome Buda, the acting Municipal Manager, Dick Naidoo, and the Manager; Housing.
Mossel Bay municipal spokesperson, Nickey le Roux says residents complained about electrification of informal housing, tariffs for electricity and water that they say are unaffordable and insisted that all accrued municipal debt be written off.
“The protesters were informed about the need to register as poor or indigent residents to qualify for discounted service tariffs, a process that applies to all residents in the greater Mossel Bay. The protesters were asked to contact their local ward councilor, Councillor Buda, to facilitate the indigent application process.”
Le Roux says the protesters were asked to identify a representative group of leaders who could liaise with the municipality. “It was also agreed that, as far as possible, feedback on the listed issues will take place within two weeks. Some of the issues may even be addressed much earlier.” Louis Fourie Road has been opened for traffic.
