NATIONAL NEWS - Radiologist Dr Pieter Henning, founder of Keystone Radiology and a central figure in several ongoing criminal and professional investigations, reportedly died in a motor vehicle accident in Potchefstroom on Wednesday 29 July.
North West police spokesperson Sergeant Kelebogile Morake said the police are investigating a case of culpable homicide following a fatal motor vehicle accident on Wednesday night.
Morake said the police cannot officially confirm the identity of the deceased to the media. However, several media outlets, including Maroela Media and Netwerk24, have identified the deceased as Henning.
Morake said the vehicle struck a lamppost and several trees at the intersection of Welgegund Avenue and Rissik Street. The exact cause of the crash is under investigation.
Henning came under the spotlight earlier this year when George Herald reported on some criminal charges arising from an alleged shooting incident at his Stellenbosch home, as well as fresh allegations of medical negligence following the death of a patient.
His connection to George was through Keystone Radiology, which he had founded and expanded into the Garden Route with the opening of a practice at Trefoil Square Medical Suites on Gloucester Avenue in 2020.
He believed George had the potential to become a medical tourism destination and introduced mobile breast cancer screening services in this region.
The George practice also featured in the investigations into Henning after a former employee became a key witness in a Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) impairment inquiry. The George branch later closed as Keystone Radiology underwent restructuring and rebranding.
At the time of his death, Henning was facing a firearm-related criminal case, an HPCSA investigation into allegations of opioid abuse, and a separate complaint alleging medical negligence in connection with the death of a patient. He denied the allegations against him.
