Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The case against Sergeant Jacobus ‘JM’ Spangenberg of the Mossel Bay K9 Langeberg Unit and his co-accused, Xolisa Msizi, has reached the plea and trial stage and will continue in the Plettenberg Bay Regional Court in January.
Spangenberg and Msizi recently appeared in court. Both are facing charges of fraud, corruption, defeating the ends of justice and possession of explosives.
The two were arrested and charged in October 2025, following a lengthy three-year investigation into Spangenberg, stemming from a case involving the recovery of an M26 hand grenade by the Mossel Bay Explosives Unit near KwaNonqaba in 2022.
A Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer Zinzi Hani, previously confirmed that Spangenberg’s involvement in the case had raised some suspicions and prompted the investigation. Msizi’s exact involvement in the matter remains unclear.
They were both released on bail shortly after their arrests.
The matter was transferred to the Plettenberg Bay courts earlier this year, where it has steadily progressed.
Spangenberg and Msizi will reappear in the Plettenberg Bay Regional Court on 20 January.
