MOSSEL BAY NEWS - This year’s Mossel Bay Sport and Recreation Festival will conclude with the 2026 South African National Criterium Championships, taking place in Mossel Bay on Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November.
The Mossel Bay Municipality has advised residents of temporary road closures affecting George Road and the De Bakke and Santos beach areas in Mossel Bay next weekend.
George Road, between Louis Fourie Road and Church Street, will be closed to public traffic during the following periods:
• Saturday 31 October: 08:00–15:00
• Sunday, 1 November: 07:00–14:00
Residents, motorists and visitors should expect temporary changes to normal traffic flow and access in the George Road, Santos and De Bakke areas.
De Bakke Terrance residents
Access to and from De Bakke Terrace will be affected from:
• Saturday 31 October: 05:00–15:00
• Sunday 1 November: 05:00–14:00
”Traffic officers will manage vehicle movement on a stop-and-go basis between races, when it is safe to do so,” says the municipality.
Additionally, no vehicles will be permitted to enter or exit during active racing. Access will only be granted when authorised by traffic officials.
Residents who require unrestricted vehicle access during the day are encouraged to consider parking along Long Street, outside the affected road-closure area.
Rider and event access
The preferred rider-access route is from Church Street and the harbour side, using the harbour gravel entrance.
The railway-side access from Louis Fourie Road is not the rider approach route. The Race Village will be situated at Santos Beach.
Riders, support teams and visitors must follow the directions of Traffic officials and event marshals.
Plan ahead
Access to affected homes, businesses, accommodation establishments and beaches may be temporarily restricted or redirected while racing is under way.
The municipality has requested that road users:
• Allow additional travelling time
• Use alternative routes where possible
• Follow temporary signage
• Obey Traffic officials and event marshals
• Remain alert for cyclists, spectators and pedestrians
• Avoid attempting to enter the active race route
