MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Staff of Mozambik Mossel Bay have been left traumatised after several armed men entered the restaurant earlier today, 4 August, and demanded money before confining the staff to the restaurant’s dry room.
Speaking to Mossel Bay Advertiser on condition of anonymity, some employees said they were busy doing prep work in the kitchen at about 11:00 when two armed men entered.
The staff members said the men were wearing reflector jackets and that they did not immediately realise something was wrong.
“They had two of our colleagues with them. They said we should gather close together and put our phones down on the floor. Then they told us to follow them,” said one of the employees.
“They took us to the dry store and told us they were not here to harm us; they wanted us to co-operate and that we should not do anything silly. Then they showed us their guns.”
Employees said there were about five men, maybe more, all of whom were armed, and they demanded to know where the money was kept.
The employees were confined to the dry room, where they stayed for between 45 minutes and an hour until they were certain the robbers had left. Two employees broke down the door to escape.
Employees told the Advertiser the men told them they were from Cape Town and were speaking isiXhosa.
One of the men had grey hair and a white beard.
An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen, but at present it is unclear whether the staff’s cellphones were taken. The matter is being investigated by Mossel Bay Police.
