GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - Residents across the Western Cape should prepare for a spell of cooler, wetter weather over the coming days as two cold fronts are expected to move across the province.

The first cold front is forecast to bring light to moderate rain from Thursday, mainly affecting the south-western coastline before spreading eastwards along the Southern Cape.

A second, stronger cold front is expected to arrive over the weekend, bringing more widespread rainfall, particularly on Sunday, when the heaviest falls are currently forecast.

Garden Route and Southern Cape to receive rain

According to the latest weather outlook, isolated showers are expected across much of the Garden Route and Southern Cape on Thursday, with a 30% chance of rain extending from the Overberg through George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.

The south-western Cape, including the Cape Town area, has a higher likelihood of rain, with a 60% chance of showers forecast.

Conditions are expected to remain cool and unsettled into Friday and Saturday before the stronger cold front reaches the province.

Cold and wet Sunday 

Forecast models indicate that Sunday could bring the most significant rainfall of the period, with widespread showers expected across the Western Cape.

While rainfall totals may still change as the forecast is updated, residents are advised to prepare for persistent rain, colder temperatures and possible localised impacts in low-lying areas.

Motorists should exercise caution on wet roads, especially in areas prone to surface flooding or reduced visibility.

Farmers welcome more rainfall

The expected rainfall will be welcome news for many farmers and water managers after another relatively dry winter period in parts of the province.

Although recent rainfall has helped maintain healthy dam levels, additional rain will continue to benefit agriculture, natural vegetation and water storage heading into the latter part of winter.

Weather systems can change as they approach, and rainfall amounts and affected areas may be adjusted over the coming days.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and any weather warnings issued by the South African Weather Service, particularly if they are planning to travel over the weekend.

Should heavier rain materialise on Sunday, localised flooding of low-lying roads and poor driving conditions cannot be ruled out.
