MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Many enquiries have been received by the Mossel Bay Municipality about the correct use of the black, blue, and green bags provided.
The Municipality introduced a three-bag system in July 2018 to encourage the sorting waste at the source to reduce landfill waste.
Refuse bags are distributed quarterly. Each household receives 39 bags free of charge per distribution. This comprises of 13 black, 13 blue, and 13 green bags.
All refuse bags must be placed outside on the sidewalk on the morning of the collection before 07:00. Black bags, containing general waste, are collected by the municipal refuse truck. Blue and green bags are collected by the municipal service providers.
The Municipality urges the community to consider the composting of green and organic waste and to dispose of bulky and/or household hazardous waste at the transfer stations at KwaNonqaba and Sonskynvallei.
Open days
On 14 October, an open day for the disposal of hazardous household waste that will take place at the Mossel Bay Town Hall and on 15 October at the Great Brak River Municipal offices from 08:30 to 14:30, respectively.
The Senior Manager (Waste Management), Sivuyile Mtila, asks residents to pay attention to the fact that since each household receives 39 bags per quarter, residents should ideally not exceed three bags per collection.
Black bags
Typically, black bags are used to dispose of non-recyclable domestic household waste.
Blue bags
These bags are used for recyclable waste. Typically, this would include cardboard, glass, paper, tins and metal, plastic, and paper packaging that contained liquid.
The Municipality kindly asks that residents rinse their recyclable waste before dumping it.
Please be careful when disposing of broken glass or glass shards as this may injure the refuse removal personnel. The same applies to tin cans; please ensure that sharp edges cannot injure the staff.
Green bags
Ideally, green bags are used for garden waste such as grass and leaves. Pruned branches must be broken into smaller, manageable pieces and tied into bundles. The contractor will also remove the bundled garden refuse.
Several landfills are conveniently located where bulky garden waste and construction debris may be dumped. Construction debris may be disposed of at the Great Brak River landfill. Garden rubbish can be dropped off at the Louis Fourie transfer station, while household waste can also be dumped at the Sonskynvallei transfer station.
For convenience, several large rubbish bins have been placed in various neighborhoods where residents can get rid of their rubbish if they cannot put their bags out on the sidewalk for removal on the scheduled day. It is a convenient alternative for holidaymakers to safely dispose of their waste when leaving their holiday accommodation before the scheduled removal.
