PRINCE ALBERT NEWS - Motorists traveling between Prince Albert and towns along the Garden Route are advised to use alternative routes while flood damage assessments continue in the region.
The Prince Albert Municipality issued updated travel guidance following recent severe weather conditions that affected several road networks.
Two alternative routes have been identified for travellers heading towards Oudtshoorn, George and Mossel Bay.
Route via Laingsburg and Ladismith
The first alternative route directs motorists from Prince Albert via Laingsburg, continuing over the Anysberg Pass to Ladismith, Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn before proceeding to George or Mossel Bay.
Approximate travel distances are:
- Prince Albert to Oudtshoorn: about 355km
- Prince Albert to George: about 415km
- Prince Albert to Mossel Bay: about 450km
Motorists are warned that this route includes an approximately 50km gravel section across the Anysberg Pass. Drivers are advised to travel with caution, especially after recent rainfall, which may affect road conditions.
Main tarred alternative route
A second option, currently regarded as the primary tarred alternative route, runs from Prince Albert via Beaufort West along the N1 and N12, continuing through Aberdeen, Willowmore and De Rust before reaching Oudtshoorn and onward to George or Mossel Bay.
Approximate travel distances are:
- Prince Albert to Oudtshoorn: about 470km
- Prince Albert to George: about 530km
- Prince Albert to Mossel Bay: about 565km
Municipal officials advise motorists to plan their trips carefully, allow additional travel time and remain alert for possible weather-related hazards while assessments of flood damage to affected roads are ongoing.
