POLITICAL NEWS - With less than 2% of the votes still outstanding, the ruling ANC has managed to amass only 40% of the national vote and has lost its majority for the first time in 30 years.
And we all know what this means…. political parties are feverishly plotting the way forward and engaged in crucial coalition discussions.
Nationally the DA managed just under 22% of the vote but in the Western Cape it took an outright majority with more than 55%. With almost 15% of the vote, the MK Party has ousted the EFF as the third strongest party in an election that saw the support of Julius Malema’s Fighters dropping to under 10% nationally.
In KZN MK achieved a landslide victory and is currently standing at 45,35%. There the ANC has been relegated into 3rd place with only 16,98% of the provincial vote. The IFP is 2nd with 18,02%.
With the EFF with 2,26% support in KZN, this doesn’t give MK and EFF enough for a majority should they go into a coalition. But if they work with some of the other smaller parties they could get there.
At this stage an ANC, DA and IFP coalition also doesn’t take these parties over the requisite 50+% to rule KZN.
With the ANC only getting 34% of the vote in Gauteng, this province is also coalition country and in the Northern Cape the ANC is just under 50%.
The Eastern Cape, Free State, Mpumalanga, North West and Limpopo remain ANC.
The big question on everyone’s lips and minds: Will the ANC and the DA form a national coalition?
The next few days and weeks will be very interesting.
