NATIONAL NEWS - The official Pinnacle Point Caves World Heritage Site celebration started at 12:00 today at the Garden Route Hotel at Pinnacle Point, Mossel Bay.
The caves were officially proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage site on 26 July.
Dignitaries
Some of the dignitaries in attendance at today's celebration were the national minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie, Premier of the Western Cape Alan Winde, Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Ricardo Mackenzie, Mossel Bay Municipality executive mayor Dirk Kotzé, and Garden Route District Municipality executive mayor Andrew Stroebel.
Scientist
Archaeologist, Professor Curtis Marean, was also present and gave a speech. He has been the key scientist working at the caves and presenting information on the findings at the caves.
It is believed stones found at the caves were sharpened by people thousands of years ago, so that they could use them as tools. Scientists say this provides valuable evidence of early human behaviour.
After the information session, the attendees enjoyed lunch.
