MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Imagine being so deft with your hands, that you can crochet, make lace, sew, do woodwork and build large metal trailers to carry goods behind a vehicle.
Lourens Nel of Heiderand in Mossel Bay does all of these.

He has just finished building two model oxwagons. One of these will have pride of place at the Voortrekker monument in Pretoria. The NG Church in Waverley, Pretoria, is holding an outreach at the monument in June. One oxwagon will go to the monument and the other will be auctioned to raise funds for the church.
Nel worked as a fire department officer and then fire chief for 22 years.
After that he worked as a boiler maker for 15 years. He broke his back and went on pension.
He is one of those people who has to be busy all the time.
He created a beautiful square piece of lace with the Lord's prayer on it. The parts of the Lord's prayer are the denser parts of the lace. He sews the sails for the oxwagons himself and he is busy crocheting blankets for the 67 Blankets for Mandela project.
He and his wife Elma's home is full of items Nel has made. His work is meticulous, from his neatly crocheted blankets with perfect tension, right through to his large, shiny metal trailers.
