MOSSEL BAY NEWS - This year’s International Female Ride Day, set to take place here in Mossel Bay on 2 May, is gearing up to be an unforgettable event with many exciting surprises and prizes for all the attendees.
The first instalment of this ride, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, was begun in Toronto, Canada, by its founder, Vicki Grey, and has since gained traction across the globe.
According to the International Female Ride Day’s Facebook page, the event was created to shine a spotlight on women riders worldwide, while building camaraderie and helping expand women’s participation across motorcycling, motorsport and powersports.
Mossel Bay’s very own Liza van Dyk, who has been riding a motorcycle for decades now, is the organiser of this year’s local version of the ride.
The riders will meet at the Marshmallow Garden Café on the R102 to the George Airport at 10:00 and will start their route from there.
Van Dyk told Mossel Bay Advertiser she had started organising the event in August or September last year, shortly after she had been diagnosed with cancer of the bladder.
Her diagnosis has not stopped her from pulling together an event she hopes will not only showcase the beauty of the Garden Route community, but also put the Garden Route on the international map.
“I want to show the world how we all stand together,” said Van Dyk.
“I have made this year’s theme ‘Go for Gold’, because I want to go big with this.”
Van Dyk is currently in Cape Town, undergoing seven weeks of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and will be back in Mossel Bay in mid-April.
