MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A large group of artists from the greater Mossel Bay area will be exhibiting at the NG Moedergemeente church hall in Church Street as part of the Mossel Bay Arts Festival.
The dates of the exhibition, where about 30 artists' works will be on display, are 21 to 26 August.
It is a rare opportunity to see so many artists' works in one place.
The exhibition times will be:
- Monday, 11:00 to 17:00
- Tuesday to Friday, 08:00 to 19:00
- Saturday, 08:00 to 15:00
These times may be affected by load shedding.
The exhibition is being organised by Reebok artist Maresna van Schoor, who has gone to a great deal of effort, founding a WhatsApp group for all the artists and having them all register using Google forms. She has liaised between the municipality, the church and the artists, constantly communicating and seeing to practicalities to make the exhibition as successful as possible.
Free
Entry to the exhibition will be free. The artworks will be for sale and there will be bank card facilities at the hall. Cash will also be accepted. There will be coffee and coffee-based drinks available. No food is allowed at the exhibition.
The exhibition is called Synergy. After a few titles were suggested, the artists voted on Synergy (or Sinergie in Afrikaans).
Van Schoor said: "A few artists got together after one of the meetings with the municipality on the arts festival and founded a group called Mossel Bay Visual Arts."
She said the idea of a group exhibition at the festival was mooted and she offered to organise it.
The municipality's director of Community Services Elize Nel mentioned during a consultation later on that the church hall could be used as a venue because it was central, had historical value and was suitable for an art exhibition.
Van Schoor said: "I'm extremely grateful the NG Moedergemeente agreed to it."
Professional and amateur
She noted that both professional and amateur artists would be exhibiting. She mentioned that artist Karli Stamhuis' adult and child students were exhibiting as amateurs, under the banner, Kids' Art Etc.
The exhibition will feature canvases, ceramics, sculpture, prints of originals, photography, glass art, works from recycled items, jewellery and other media.
Van Schoor notes that all artists had to register by a certain date to take part. She said she was still receiving enquiries from artists and crafters wishing to exhibit, but the cut-off date for registration had to be adhered to.
The positive was that the interest from artists indicated that this could be an even larger event in the future.
Most of the artists come from the Mossel Bay area, but one even hails from De Rust.
Van Schoor thanks all the sponsors and contributors for helping to make the exhibition possible.
