MOSSEL BAY NEWS - October was Marine Month and The Dias Shell Museum and Aquarium focused on Sustainable Seafood as a theme for 2017.
Visitors to the museum could learn more about SASSI, the South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative and special displays in the Shell Museum indicated which seafood is still plentiful and which seafood is scarce, or becoming scarce and should rather not be purchased.
The informative pocket guide available can be kept in a purse to make sure which seafood can be purchased, with the the easy "traffic-light" approach in which the species are listed in three categories: Green - go for it!, Orange - think twice and Red – do not buy it!
On Tuesday evening an event was held in celebration of Marine Month, in which a short and interesting programme was enjoyed by Friends of the Museum and people passionate about our marine life.
A short video about SASSI was shown, whereafter Shirley Schmidt informed the audience about Ocean Hide, a revolutionary product range made from fish skin.
A photo presentation by the Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (S.M.A.R.T.), accompanied by more information given about the work the volunteers do during mammal strandings, followed and the guests were then treated to delicious sustainable seafood refreshments.
