GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Two officials from Eden Lifesaving have been honoured with accolades from Lifesaving SA and one of them will be attending the World Rescue Challenge in the Azores, Portugal, in November.
Gerald de Jager has been recognised for his contribution and dedication to Lifesaving SA for more than 50 years.
He received a Meritorious Award.
Outstanding contribution
Carlo Klaasen received the 2024 President Award for his outstanding contribution to Lifesaving SA.
An Eden Lifesaving spokesperson said: "We are extremely proud of these two members of Eden Lifesaving.
"We congratulate both recipients of awards, who were recognised at the Lifesaving SA annual awards dinner on Saturday, 27 July, in Durban."
De Jager, who served Eden Lifesaving for many years, is a board member of Lifesaving South Africa.
Klaasen is a Lifesaving SA regional chief examiner.
Development extrication team
Another plus for Klaasen is that he is part of the South Africa Medical and Rescue Organisation (SAMRO) development extrication team to attend the 2024 World Rescue Challenge (WRC) in the Azores, Portugal, from 5 to 9 November.
Rescue
Extrication has to do with rescue of people from vehicles.
The World Rescue Challenge, run by the World Rescue Organisation, brings together medical and emergency personnel from several countries so they can learn more in their field and exchange ideas.
Klaasen is one of six in the development extrication team from South Africa.
Countries
Teams from countries such as Australia, USA, Canada, Ghana, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Luxemburg, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Republic of Ireland and Taiwan attend the event, learning more about vehicle rescue and casualty care.
A letter from the WRO notes: "Experience has shown that such participation and interaction has greatly assisted with the development of vehicle rescue and casualty care skills."
