MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Young lifeguards, trained to save people from risky situations in rough surf, work eight-hour shifts in sweltering heat on most of the popular beaches in and around Mossel Bay.
Last week these lifeguards approached the municipality to ask for help in finding suitable umbrellas or gazebos to provide shelter from the sun.
Mossel Bay executive mayor, Alderman Harry Levendal, said: "The request offers a unique opportunity to visitors and local businesses to become involved with the various lifesaving clubs.
"Here an opportunity presents itself for businesses to market themselves through branding on ordinary beach umbrellas or gazebos that the young lifesavers may use for the duration of the festive season."
He praised the lifeguards for the sacrifices they make not only for the duration of the busy festive season, but also for the almost year-round training and work they do to become and remain super-fit, skilled and motivated.
Anyone interested in becoming involved in any way to better the working conditions of the lifeguards can contact the office of the municipal manager (044 606 5000) and speak to the executive manager, Colin Puren.
