MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Crew members of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in Mossel Bay came to the rescue of an injured penguin this afternoon, Sunday 13 July.
Christiaan Stopforth of the NSRI told Mossel Bay Advertiser that the penguin had appeared on a private beach near the NSRI's sea rescue base.
According to him, a crew member spotted the penguin in the water and alerted him.
When he arrived on the beach, Stopforth waded into the water with a towel in hand. He gently picked up the penguin in it and moved it into a box, noticing a wound on one of the animal's flippers.
Stopforth called the Seabird and Penguin Rehabilitation Centre (Saprec) in Mossel Bay, who took over the penguin's care.
Carol Walton of Saprec says the penguin has sustained serious injuries as a result of being badly bitten.
Walton told the Advertiser they have given the animal all the medication they could, but would ultimately have to wait until Monday when a veterinarian is available to assist further.
The penguin is not only injured on its flipper, but along its chest as well.
Should anyone find an injured seabird, contact SAPREC on 082 364 3382.
