MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Two Hillcrest Secondary School learners handed out soup, bread and muffins at the taxi rank off Montagu Street in Mossel Bay, to people living rough.
Abongile Bam (15), in Grade 9 at Hillcrest, asked a fellow learner, La Rochelle Steenberg (18), in Grade 12, to help him in this project.
Cold
It was an exceptionally cold day on Saturday, 6 July, when the two learners handed out the food.
Abongile said he asked La Rochelle's mother if she could contribute the soup.
He made about 40 muffins himself. He wanted the muffins to be a sweet treat after the soup and bread.
"I have been wanting to do this for a long time," he said. "They say, 'together you can make a difference'. Every little bit goes a long way. I wanted to show that Hillcrest learners really care."
Annelize Steenberg accompanied her daughter, La Rochelle, and Abongile on their mission and all three said a big "thank you" to Annelize's employers, Lizette and Andre van den Bergh, who sponsored the soup.

Hand out the food
Abongile said he thought of the taxi rank as a suitable place to hand out the food, "because I remember seeing people sleeping on the street there and it really broke my heart".
He said: "I had been been wondering what they had to eat." He "gave all the credit" to Annelize, "because this wouldn't have been possible without her and she has a heart of gold".
Upliftment
Abongile noted that he planned further community upliftment projects for the future.
He said his mother often said that it is having humanity that makes you a person. Abongile described himself thus: "I'm a model, actor and philanthropist from Gemini Model and Talent Agency in Mossel Bay."
