MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Kane Johnstone, a local endurance athlete is set to swim 20.5km from The Point to Glentana tomorrow, 19 February, as part of Project Deep, a locally driven ocean awareness initiative supporting marine conservation and shark protection efforts in the region.
Run in partnership with the local non-profit organisation Earth Legacy Foundation, this daunting feat by Johnstone hopes to build awareness and support from the Mossel Bay community for the proposed Mossel Bay Shark Catch Exclusion Zone (Scez).
Scez is a spatial protection measure aimed at safeguarding one of South Africa’s most important coastal shark habitats.
Johnstone is set to start the swim at 06:00, at The Point tomorrow morning and is expected to finish his swim between 13:00 and 14:00 at Glentana tomorrow afternoon,
On-water logistical support will be provided by Go Dive Mossel Bay whose vessel and crew will accompany the swimmer throughout the crossing, and Johnstone has organised a medic to be on board to ensure compliance with open-water safety requirements.
