MOSSEL BAY NEWS - At the monthly council meeting on 1 August, the executive mayor of Mossel Bay, Alderman Harry Levendal, announced that the dream of an effective drug rehabilitation centre for the greater Mossel Bay area is one step closer.
Alderman Levendal said plans for the centre, provisionally earmarked for where the new provincial hospital would have been built, were well advanced.
Although it is deemed a municipal project, Alderman Levendal stressed the facility would cater for the entire Southern Cape region.
"My vision is that the rehabilitation centre will work towards an effective exit strategy for all the people they will work with. Skills development will prevent young people from turning to drugs. "While it is necessary to have a turnaround strategy for people suffering drug addiction, an exit strategy is imperative to ensure the long-term success of the work done at the rehab centre," Alderman Levendal said.
"Helping but one drug addicted person is to help an entire community as it is not only the drug addict who suffers from the scourge of drug peddling in the community. I urge town councillors and the community to rally behind the establishment of a drug rehabilitation centre to ensure our sustainability as a caring town."
