MOSSEL BAY NEWS - At its open monthly meeting on Thursday 30 October, the Mossel Bay Council approved a motion of exigency brought forward by Mark Furness, portfolio chair for finance, paving the way for a special debt relief initiative aimed at supporting churches, public benefit organisations (PBOs), non-profit organisations (NPOs) and parsonages.
The resolution not only offers significant financial relief, but also serves as a practical means of recovering outstanding municipal debt rather than writing it off completely.
This means that from 1 November to 31 January, qualifying organisations will have the opportunity to pay only 10% of their total outstanding balance (including arrears, interest and current charges).
The remaining 90% will be written off.
Why this offer was introduced
The Mossel Bay Municipality's spokesperson, Cornelle Carstens, says many of these institutions play a vital role in serving their communities, but often depend heavily on donations.
"Ongoing financial pressures have made it increasingly difficult for them to settle municipal accounts."
The municipality plans to promote the offer widely to ensure all eligible organisations are informed and able to benefit from the relief programme.
