MOSSEL BAY NEWS - After receiving reports of a foul smell and spillage in the Bayview River, the Mossel Bay Municipality last week visited the site to investigate the matter and determine the origin of the white substance found in the water.
Although no sample was taken of the water or substance at the time, the main priority was to determine the source of the pipe from which the spillage came by placing a camera into the pipe.
According to the municipal environmental officer, Warren Manuel, a camera investigation was conducted on Thursday to try and find the source of the pipe.
However, the camera could only follow the pipe for a distance of 26 meter.
A second attempt was made on Friday, but after searching the densely vegetated area, the technical service team only found a pipe marker.
After digging 2 meters deep, no pipe could be found. This attempt had to be abandoned, as digging deeper in sandy conditions is potentially dangerous.
Unfortunately, at this stage, it seems to be most unlikely that the source of the pipe will be found and therefore the investigation was closed.
Although the source of the pipe could not be detected, the outlet to the river has been blocked, as well as the section of the pipe through which the camera was inserted to avoid any further spillages.
The Bayview river has since been treated with a bacteriological agent and will continuously be assessed to determine if any more action is required.
