MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Kane Johnstone, a local endurance athlete, is doing well during his 20.5km open water swim. At around 10:00 this morning, 19 February, Johnstone was halfway to his destination in Glentana.
Johnstone's journey began at The Point early this morning at 06:00, and is expected to end at Glentana between 14:00 and 15:00 this afternoon.
He is being closely followed by an on-water logistical support team, provided by Go Dive Mossel Bay, who are handing him energy drinks, water and cramp gel every 30 minutes.
In a statement shared by the local non-profit organisation, the Earth Legacy Foundation, on Friday 13 February, Johnstone said the ocean has shaped his life physically, mentally and spiritually.

“This swim is not about conquering the ocean; it is about respecting it, representing it and helping to protect it.”
Johnstone is swimming in support of Project Deep, a locally driven ocean awareness initiative supporting marine conservation and shark protection efforts in the region.
Run in partnership with the Earth Legacy Foundation, this daunting feat of Johnstone’s hopes to build awareness and support from the Mossel Bay community for the proposed Mossel Bay Shark Catch Exclusion Zone (Scez).
