MOSSEL BAY NEWS AND VIDEO - A group of learners who will leave the safety of their homes in Mossel Bay to pursue their future dreams next year, attended a self defence workshop presented at Tiger Kai Academy - a gym and martial arts school - during the school holiday.
With the spate of gender-based violence the country has seen in past months, this type of empowerment seems almost more vital than a sound education at the moment.
With the new school term starting and the festive season, with all its ills lying ahead, the Mossel Bay Advertiser spoke to instructors at Tiger Kai regarding its workshops and personal safety tips.
Krav Maga, which is taught at Tiger Kai, consists of quick counter attacks and brutal offensive techniques. It is the ideal system for unexpected and dangerous violent attacks. "You will learn how to evaluate a situation, the threat level and how to respond appropriately. Training is designed for, and undertaken in, simulated real life situations, so that if you find yourself in a life-threatening situation, you can react without hesitation," explains instructor Philip Goodger.
"Students will learn how to take out, or neutralise, an attacker as quickly and simply as possible while minimising the risk of injury to one's self and family."

Focus on girls
In light of personal safety in a seemingly ever more violent society, Tiger Kai has taken on the challenge of offering self defence training to girls.
"We will be launching a project to train matric girls before they leave to go to varsity so that they are equipped and ready for anything. We want them to be able to be in a condition, in which they are aware of their surroundings at all times," says Goodger.
Some safety awareness tips shared by Goodger include:
- An attacker is a predator, almost like a lion that attacks injured antelope. They attack the weak. So, if you look weak, you are prey.
- Always walk with confidence when walking down the street. Always look around and be aware of your surroundings.
- Trust your instinct. If it doesn't feel right, then it might not be right. Walk away. Try to avoid a situation than go into one.
- Don't walk and talk on your cellphone. You are distracted then. You are advertising that you have something expensive that someone might want. Put your cellphone away and make calls or send texts when you are in a safe place.
- Always be alert.
