The Department forms part of the governmental cluster that undertook to effectively make an end to violence against women and children. Part of this commitment was a pledge signed by all the men employed by the Department of Justice in Mossel Bay declaring their undertaking to consciously work towards preventing violence. As part of the pledge they promised to do everything in their power to stop this violence, and to prevent it from ever taking place in their presence.
Part of the pledge the men signed, reads: " A real man respects women. He also knows that ignoring violence caused by others is equally dangerous as the violence itself. A real man believes ...(that) with his signature he is committing that his actions will always and everywhere reflect his dedication to equality of all people and their right for respect and freedom".
The highlight of the project and the culmination of a number of subsequent events will be a fun day provisionally being planned for 30 November, court manager Mrs Justine Gericke told the Mossel Bay Advertiser. She added that each signatory of the declaration will in turn write their own pledge, in their own words to further underscore their commitment to this initiative.
The project will be rolled out to various departments and communities in the whole of the Southern Cape.
Mrs Gericke said the project stemmed from the brutal rape and murder of young Anene Booysen in the Overberg earlier this year which has shocked the entire country.
