MOSSEL BAY NEWS- Beachgoers in Dana Bay had to look twice this morning when they saw a king penguin waddling on Second Beach.
Incredibly, the lost penguin had made it all the way from the sub-Antarctic islands to Dana Bay, travelling thousands of kilometres.
The founder of the Seabird and Penguin Rehabilitation Centre (SAPREC) at Mossdustria, outside Mossel Bay, Carol Walton, told Mossel Bay Advertiser the penguin landed on a busy beach.
“We have taken it in and put it into total isolation." She said SAPREC was waiting for the results of different tests done on the penguin.
Walton says it will be known within 24 hours if the tests, for avian flu among others, are negative.
“We will take it down to a deserted beach and monitor it and see if it goes back into the ocean. Hopefully it will go back to where it belongs.”
The sex of the penguin is not yet known. Walton says SAPREC would have to do a blood test to confirm the sex of the bird.
