MOSSEL BAY NEWS - At the monthly council meeting on Thursday, 30 August, council unanimously approved the new 2018/19 electricity tariffs.
The ACDP representative, Councillor Jeanette Gouws, however expressed her concern at the tariff increase, saying it could have been smaller if residents did not have to subsidise the illegal electricity connections in 21 informal settlements.
"Council had budgeted for loss of R31 million and in no way does that amount to only distribution losses," she said. She expressed concern about the unchecked influx and escalation of illegal informal housing in the informal settlements and called for an urgent and innovative approach to manage the problem of illegal electricity usage in these areas.
No comments, objections or represen-tations were received during the munici-pality's public participation about the new electricity tariffs.
The tariffs approved by NERSA to be implemented for 2018/19, are:
- Scale one, tariff 1.D (Domestic, three phase, two part tariff - R22.14/three phase amp;
- Scale nine, municipal street lighting - R1.0737/kwh; and
- Scale nine, private street lighting - R107.370 per pole.
