MOSSEL BAY NEWS - After almost 20 years in local government, Mossel Bay Municipality’s director of Corporate Services, Edward Jantjies, will be joining the private sector.
Jantjies announced his early retirement at the monthly council meeting on 26 May.
His career has had many highlights. Under his leadership, Mossel Bay Municipality was the first local government to implement the latest regulatory amendments and consequent new policies in staffing regulations.
Jantjies has visited several municipalities across the country to provide advice and guidance with this process.
Under his leadership, the municipality has achieved several top achievements. He was responsible for establishing a rural development unit, at the time the only one of its kind in the country. With unique leadership, he guided the establishment of the Socio-Economic Development Unit and the Local Economic Development and SMME Unit within the municipality.
The Thusong Centre, which was named the best-run Thusong centre in the country, was established under his leadership.
He also took the lead in establishing the Beehive economic units for emerging entrepreneurs in the greater Mossel Bay area and the neighbourhood development fund.
His passion for youth development resulted in a Youth Development Unit, a Youth Centre, numerous E-Learning facilities, and the establishment of the Junior Town Council. His vision and leadership created many opportunities for young people within the municipality through internships and study opportunities in all the respective directorates.
As director of Corporate Services, he has led Mossel Bay Municipality's human development programmes to great heights that have covered all aspects of skills development and competencies.
His strategic organisational ability has given rise to numerous successful town festivals, including the annual Dias and sports festivals, which have contributed handsomely to the town's economy.
Also, the municipality, under his leadership, hosted the first International Gender Summit. Jantjies represented the Mossel Bay Municipality on various external professional bodies.
Mayor Kotzé congratulated Jantjies for urging Kotzé to obtain a Master's degree in Public Management from North-West University.
"Edward was the driving force that motivated me to further my studies at tertiary level. I will always be grateful to him for his encouragement," said Alderman Kotzé.
Jantjies will pursue his passion for strategic teaching and training in the private sector.
