GARDEN ROUTE NEWS & VIDEO - The Eden and Central Karoo district has the second highest matric pass rate in the Western Cape for 2023 with an average of 84,6%.
This is 0,6% higher than the target the district had set itself.
District Director Jewel Jonkers expressed his satisfaction at this brilliant achievement this morning, Friday 19 January.
"I am so excited about this. We are only 0,8% behind Metropole North who is first. I have not doubt in my mind that the top position is possible," said Jonkers amid loud cheers from circuit managers, school principals and key staff members who attended the announcement at the district office in George.
Compared with 2022, the 2023 pass rate is an improvement of 1,2%.
Out of the 32 schools in the Western Cape that achieved a 100% pass rate, eight (25%) are from Eden and Central Karoo: Oakdale, Heidelberg, Outeniqua, Langenhoven Gymnasium, Hoërskool Langenhoven, Point, Wittedrift and Albertinia.
Eight schools in the district achieved a pass rate of between 90% and 99%, and 16 between 80% and 90%.
Wearing an Outeniqua tie, Jonkers singled out this school and lauded the principal, Christo Vorster, for a 100% pass rate in all the grades.
"If you look at numbers and improvements, Outeniqua stands tall when it comes to the whole of this province. When you look at everybody who is currently among the 100% schools, Outeniqua is in a class of its own because of the numbers that they put through."
Bachelor's passes
A total of 41% of learners in the district achieved a bachelor's pass. This is 1% above the target set by the district.
Huge improvement for Indwe and Concordia
Jonkers also praised two schools that had underperformed in 2022 with pass rates of under 70%, but that showed huge improvement. They are Indwe High, that pushed up its pass rate to 79,9%, and Concordia that attained 80,1%.
