MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A Mossel Bay woman came first in the Eastern Cape leg of the BMW GS motorbike challenge held at Storms River Village on 11 May and won the GS Trophy.
BMW hosts the competition, in which motorcyclists demonstrate their control of the GS model motorcycle.
Chantel Blake-Visser (31), who lives in Dana Bay, came first out of the men and women in the competition.
She rides a GS 1200 motorcycle.
The competition took place on grass, in between the trees in the village. There were three women entrants, but 11 entrants in total including the men. "It's good to compete and show that women can also ride bikes," Chantel said, pleased with her win.
"I have been riding offroad for more than a year and a half. I have always ridden bikes, since I was in school, but on tar roads."
For the last year and a half Chantel has been training with Country Trax, which offers courses which promote motorcycling skills.
Country Trax is affiliated to BMW. Chantel explains that marshalls from Country Trax were involved in the competition at Storms River Village.
Chantel, who describes herself as a housewife when asked what her fulltime job is, says: "I want to quality for next year's championships in New Zealand." The international championship takes place every two years.
She will be taking place in the next trials which are from 5 to 8 September in Dullstroom, which are a qualifier for the international championship.
Chantel was the women's winner of the Western Cape provincial competition held on 16 March. It was held on a wine farm, Anura, near Durbanville.
