GARDEN ROUTE SPORT NEWS - The inaugural Hoekwil Die Vleie 8.5km trail run and the 3km fun run or walk took place on Saturday, 30 October, in superb conditions.
The race, organised by Cape Multisport Club Eden, drew participants from all over the Garden Route and a fair number came from Mossel Bay.
There was a light shower in the morning before the races began, but the weather cleared soon and the sun shone throughout.
It was the first time the race was run as a trail run. It has always been a 10km road race - and an SWD qualifying race for competitive runners held in June, but had to be cancelled because of Covid-19 and it was decided to host a trail run this year, plus the usual 3km fun run or walk.
The trail run covered tar and dust roads through Hoekwil and then a muddy track on a farm. The farm track was covered with fresh cow pats and runners had to pick their way carefully.
The course covered steep uphills and downhills.
There were spectacular views of farmland and the Outeniqua mountains. Because of recent good rains, Hoekwil was in full bloom, with arum lilies, pink watsonias and other flowers in profusion.
The 8.5km race was completed by 83 participants and about 55 people took part in the 3km run or walk.
The events started and ended at Die Vleie NG Church in Hoekwil. The church held a bazaar that morning, so runners and walkers could enjoy bazaar treats after they had competed.
