MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A soccer tournament initiated last year by the chair of the KwaNonqaba Community Policing Forum, Edgar Ntebe, who also is an ardent soccer coach and manager, concluded only this year, after nine months, at the request of the newly elected leadership of the Mossel Bay Local Football Association (Molfa).
On the weekend of 16 March the tournament drew to a close with Young Stars FC emerging as the overall winners. They defeated Baruch's FC in the finals, while Transition FC and Mighty Eagles FC ended third and fourth respectively.
At his inauguration as the new chair of Molfa, chairman Vuyani S Ndamase said football is in sport terms a community unifier.
"We compete as teams to inspire the juniors to see a need to become involved in sport in order to cut the risk of involving themselves in unethical behaviors such as theft, housebreaking, or the use and peddling of drugs."
Ntebe has long strived to involve the youth of Asla Park and KwaNonqaba in sport to ensure they are kept occupied constructively and away from harm.
He thanks his longtime sponsor, Len Swanepoel of Bay Loans, for not withdrawing from the tournament, which only concluded after nine months, and also for sticking to his commitment to help young players realise their dreams of a better life through his regular sponsorships.
"Swanepoel is a business leader who shares our passion to effectively engage the youth through and to better their lives by giving them the physical challenges involved in soccer to achieve their goals.
"Through the sponsorship of Bay Loans we are making great strides in our endeavour to fight crime," Ntebe said.
Through the sponsorship of Bay Loans, all participating teams received consolation prizes and the referees were given refreshments throughout the tournament.
