SOUTHERN CAPE NEWS - Heavy rain on the last day had the final say in the Sunfoil Cup Three-Day match between Northern Cape and South Western Districts played in Kimberley last weekend.
Albertus Kennedy, chief executive officer of SWD cricket, said his team was in a commanding position when the match was abandoned just after lunch on the final day after they enforced the home team to follow-on.
After being requested to bat, SWD posted a massive 388/8, thanks to a magnificent innings by Daniel Sincuba, who recorded his maiden first-class century.
Sincuba, who faced 289 balls, ended on 154 (13x4) and was involved in two century partnerships - 135 runs for the third wicket with Sammy-Joe Avontuur (75) and 116 for the sixth wicket with Hanno Kotze (64).
The captain, Brendon Louw, also added a valuable unbeaten 40*.
Macello Piedt (4/64) and Mthobeli Bangindawo (3/30) were the bowling heroes as Northern Cape was dismissed for 197 runs in their first innings - a deficit of 189 runs. In their follow-on innings they were at 83/2 - still 108 runs behind, with more than 60 overs left, on the day when play was abandoned after a heavy thunderstorm.
• The limited over match due to be played on Sunday was abandoned without a ball being bowled after the umpires ruled that the outfield was too wet to start play.
