MOSSEL BAY CRICKET NEWS - A disappointing batting performance by SWD in their vital one-day clash against the North West Dragons at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom on Sunday, 13 January was the main reason for their four-wicket defeat against the defending champions. SWD, who were put in to bat, posted a modest 187/9 in their allotted 50 overs.
The captain, Obus Pienaar, with an unbeaten 83 from 110 balls (3x6, 3x4) did not receive sufficient support from his fellow batters. The home side (190/6) reached the target in the 48th over for a four-wicket victory. The defeat was a serious drawback for Pienaar and his men's ambition to reach the finals.
Although they are still the log leaders (24 points after seven matches), Northerns are in second place at 21 points, but do have a game in hand.
Besides the fact that SWD will need to win all their last three matches, they will also hope that Northerns are on the losing end at some stage.
SWD's next round of matches will be from 7 to 10 February, when they take on KwaZulu-Natal at the REC Ground in Oudtshoorn.
The summarised score card is:
North West vs SWD
SWD 187/9 (50): Obus Pienaar 83, Brandon Louw 26, Jean du Plessis 26, Lourens Steenkamp 2/17, Brady Barends 2/23, Katleho Leokaoke 2/33, Johannes Diseko 2/45.
