MOSSEL BAY NEWS - In South Africa, women make up just over half of the population, however, they remain relatively unrepresented in positions of authority and power.
According to the South African Department of Statistics, women dominate in occupations such as domestic, administrative or technical work and are recorded to be more likely to be involved in doing unpaid work than men.
The Oceans Research Foundation is striving to build leaders and ocean ambassadors through its woman employability project, in which it aims to build skills and develop local young women for employment.
The students get an opportunity to do a course in level 1 first aid, as well as a marine mammal stranding course.
Also, they will undergo pre-sea induction, life guarding and obtain a skipper's licence.
"The students were expected to participate and show interest in our conservation education days, swimming and sailing and submit a video or written summary," says Sophumelela Qoma, the programme facilitator. She thanked the community of Mossel Bay, various service providers and sponsors who offered their time and expertise to make the programme a reality in changing lives.
"It was an amazing experience to see all the fears fading away through the education and physical time in the ocean.
"This programme is not only developing skills and creating an employable youth but exposing these students to different paths they can take, creating new goals, visions and dreams that get them excited about life."
