MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The 33-year old woman who was struck by a vehicle on Louis Fourie Road on Thursday morning, 22 November was treated in the Mossel Bay Provincial Hospital for a broken leg, hospital spokesperson Nadia Ferreira has confirmed.
According to the KwaNonqaba police communications officer, Sgt Kapp, the accident happened at 08:20 on Louis Fourie Road at the Crotz Street intersection.
Sgt Kapp said according to reports Nsiki Nkosana of Willowmore Street in Asla Park was trying to cross Louis Fourie Road when she was hit by a white Toyota bakkie, driven by a 58-year-old man from George. Onlookers said the man appeared traumatised, but not hurt in the incident.
"As I drove by, I noticed a person lying on the road. A man was kneeling by the side of the road, clutching his head between his hands." The vehicle was damaged in the accident..
Nkosana was taken by ambulance to the Provincial Hospital for treatment.
The police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.
Bystanders who spoke to the Mossel Bay Advertiser after the accident again stressed how dangerous it was for pedestrians trying to cross Louis Fourie Road.
There are no proper pedestrian crossings and no traffic lights to slow down traffic on the 80km/h road despite the fact that hundreds of people have to cross the road daily to get to their taxis to go to and from work.
"There have been talks about moving the current access road to Dana Bay to meet up with Crotz Street. The traffic lights that are now being used at the Flora Road intersection would then reportedly be moved also to create a safer intersection.
"This would also greatly alleviate the traffic build-up during peak hours at this intersection, where it is at times virtually impossible to turn from Crotz Street into Louis Fourie Road in the direction of PetroSA.
However, there is no indication when or whether these changes will actually happen," an onlooker said.
