MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A Mossel Bay farmer won first place with one of his heifers at the Holstein National Championships held in George.
Marius Meyer's heifer, Mountain View Have It All Suzy 22103, aged eight and a half months, took the honours. The song by Eddie Cantor goes, If you knew Susie…Oh, what a girl.

Meyer's farm is Rietvlei, on the N2 outside Mossel Bay on the way to Cape Town. The farm business is Jannie Meyer en Seuns Boerdery. Meyer's father, Jannie, is deceased. Meyer farms with his brother, Christo.
During the Holstein National Championships, the heifers were judged on the Thursday and the cows on the Friday, 24 and 25 August.
Holsteins, also called Holstein Friesians, have bold black and white markings and are prized for their high milk production.
Gratifying
What made the win all the more gratifying for Meyer was that Brian Carscadden, a world-renowned cattle expert from Canada, was the judge.
The heifers were first judged in their age groups and then the first two placed in each group went through to the final, which Meyer's heifer won.
"The victory for Mountain View Have It All Suzy 22103 was remarkable because she was in the youngest age group," Meyer says.
The family's stud is called Mountain View Holsteins. Meyer is no stranger to calf-breeding fame. "In 2018 my calves took first and second place at the Holstein National Championships in Stellenbosch," he says.
The championships were not held during the Covid-19 pandemic.
