Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The fatality in the boat accident at Tergniet today has been identified as Hannes Steyn (49) of Welkom in the Free State.
He and his wife, Maryna (37), were on the boat when it capsized, according to Maryna's stepsister, Desiré Banks, who lives in Port Elizabeth.
Hannes had had a heart attack two weeks ago and had a pacemaker fitted. The couple had come to their holiday home in Dana Bay to relax.
Desiré said Maryna had told her that the sea was dead still when she and Hannes dropped their fishing lines in the water this morning. Then a very large wave came. Hannes said to Maryna: "Here comes trouble." More large waves came and the boat overturned and the couple were stranded in the water at the boat.
Desiré told Maryna that the waves had kept coming. Hannes said to Maryna: "I'm tired. You must swim and save yourself."
Maryna managed to swim to shore and on her way was helped out of the sea by two Tergniet residents, Lodewyk Schoeman and his daughter, Tonya.
By the time a policeman and a NSRI member got to Hannes, he was unconscious. He was declared dead on the scene.
Hannes leaves two daughters from a previous marriage and he and Maryna had a son together.
Family and loved ones were making their way to Mossel Bay today to support Maryna, Desiré said.
NSRI Mossel Bay station commander André Fraser said Hannes was face down in the water when the NSRI member arrived at him. Fraser said the exact cause of death could not be ascertained. This could only be determined by a post mortem.
