MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A man died in a boat accident near the tidal pool at Tergniet this morning.
It was a small fishing boat. A man and woman were on the boat when it overturned near the shore. Tergniet resident Lodewyk Schoeman told the Mossel Bay Advertiser that he and his daughter Tonya managed to assist the woman.
By Grace ambulance services and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) arrived on the scene after that.
The man was unconscious and was given CPR by By Grace staff, but he died at the scene.
Great Brak Police spokesperson Sergeant Lauriane Botha confirmed that two civilians helped the woman and that a policeman, Sergeant Arno du Plessis and an NSRI swimmer went to assist the man, but he died on the scene.
Botha said it is believed the man and woman were holidaymakers in Mossel Bay.
The man, aged about 49, was trapped under the boat when it overturned, but the woman had managed to swim out from under the boat.
The incident took place between 09:00 and 10:00 according to Botha.
The exact cause of death of the man - whether it was a drowning or not - could not be confirmed yet, Botha said. No more information is available at this stage.
The Mossel Bay Advertiser is awaiting information from the NSRI and By Grace ambulance services, who have been asked for comment.
