MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The arrival of triplet baby girls at the Life Bay View Hospital in Mossel Bay has turned the world of their parents, Emma Kotzé (27) and Chris Rossouw (30), upside down.
The couple, who have been together for five years, have suddenly gone from being the parents of one two-year-old daughter to being the parents of four daughters.
The babies, Caroline (2kg), Emily (1.5kg) and Elsie (1.6kg), were born on Tuesday 27 January.
Emma told Mossel Bay Advertiser she and Chris had always planned on having two children. However, after learning she was pregnant, they were soon informed they were having twins.
"I was shocked," said Emma. "We'd previously joked with the doctor at the time of our first scan that there should only be one baby, but then it ended up being twins."
Later, during a follow-up scan in George, the doctor told the couple they were actually expecting three babies.
According to Emma, the doctor explained one of the amniotic sacs carrying one twin had split in the womb, creating a third sac with a third baby.
Out of the three babies, Emily and Elsie are identical twins.
Conceiving triplets naturally, with-out the help of IVF treatments, is incredibly rare, therefore making it a high-risk pregnancy.
To monitor her condition, Emma was admitted into the hospital in December.
Her babies were delivered via C-section, as there was a concern that their umbilical cords would become twisted.
She told the Advertiser she and Chris are excited about having a house full of girls.
"I'm looking forward to having a huge girl tribe and bonding with them; enjoying them, being girly together," she said. "I still can't believe it."
The babies spent some time in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit, but were finally discharged alongside their mum on Sunday 22 February.
