MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Three senior coaches of The Surfer Kids Non-Profit in Mossel Bay came to the rescue of two children, aged 12 and 14, on Tuesday 25 November, when they got caught in a rip current while swimming at Diaz Beach.
These three young men of The Surfer Kids headquarters, Sandiso Ntosho, Mbasa Yabo and Lukhangele Thabata, spotted the children in the water and immediately jumped into action, managing to bring both back to the safety of the shore.
“All our coaches are qualified lifeguards, and when our programme is not running, we continue to keep a close eye on the beach to help prevent drownings and ensure it is a safe environment for those who make use of it,” said Chuma Magusha, manager for The Surfer Kids.
“This is just one of many incidents we’ve responded to over this year alone.”
Magusha told Mossel Bay Advertiser the two children had been at the beach alone - without an adult. “We urge all parents and guardians to ensure their children are supervised at all times when visiting the beach, and that they are accompanied by a responsible adult,” he said.
“A lack of supervision increases the chances of drowning.”
The Surfer Kids and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) have urged beach-goers to exercise caution when in the water, especially regarding rip currents.
The public is advised to get acquainted with tide times, visit beaches protected by lifeguards, and avoid venturing into the water too deep.
