Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Following the strong winds that have continued to sweep through Mossel Bay and the greater Garden Route since this morning, 11 May, the South African Weather Service (Saws) has issued a level 2 warning of a storm surge expected to hit the Western Cape from this evening until Wednesday 13 May, bringing heavy rains, high waves and rising coastal water levels.
As a safety precaution, all schools in the province will be closed tomorrow, 12 May.
A number of municipal infrastructures were closed throughout today due to concerns for public safety. The sea has also been affected; in a video taken by Mossel Bay resident and photographer Julian Scholtz, some rough waves can be seen crashing against infrastructure near the Mossel Bay Port.
The persistent wind has left some damaged infrastructure in its wake, most notably uprooted trees, collapsed walls, and the roofs of a few homes in informal settlements in Asla Park, KwaNonqaba, having been blown off.
Additionally, a fallen lamp post and traffic lights in Hartenbos were also documented, and parts of the Langeberg Mall’s roof were lifted off.
The large trees that had fallen across the R328 near Ruiterbos earlier this morning have since been cleared, and the road has been reopened.
Motorists have been advised to reduce their speed, remain alert for obstructions and emergency teams on the roads, avoid unnecessary travel and where possible, to not park any vehicles near or under trees.
The public has been urged to stay indoors where possible, avoid power lines and unstable structures, and to immediately report any emergencies directly to the municipality on 044 606 5000 or the Garden Route Disaster Management Centre on 044 805 5071.
Further updates will be issued by the Mossel Bay Municipality as the conditions change.
