MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Taking a stance against gender-based violence on Valentine’s Day was everyone who attended and participated in the well-supported soccer tournament hosted by the Greater Mossel Bay SAPS Football Club.
This all-day event, held on the Ext 23 sportsground, drew scores of supporters.
One of the founders of the police’s soccer team, and the tournament, Sergeant Malusi Matiya, said the event celebrated love and unity and raised awareness against gender-based violence.
Thirteen teams representing various local businesses and organisations participated. Each team also donated some bags filled with sanitary pads, which will be handed out to schools and organisations in the area throughout the week.
The participating teams were the SAPS Football Club, the Mossel Bay Municipality, PetroSA, Shell Voorbaai, Henra, Taxi Rangers, Mikeva, the Department of Education, Sea Vuna, Pinnacle Point, Nestlé, Cape Karoo International (CKI) and Ruwacon.
There were two semi-final games. In the first, the SAPS played against the municipality and lost on penalties. In the second, Mikeva played against CKI, who won 3-0.
The finals saw the municipality and CKI go head to head, but it was CKI who came out on top, winning the final game 3-0.
Matiya thanked all the teams for their participation, the spectators for their support and the sponsors of the tournament.
