MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Local skateboarders will soon be able to enjoy a professional skateboard bowl, designed by South African Olympic skateboarder Dallas Oberholser.
Oberholser (49) competed in the Paris Olympics and is ranked 22nd in his age group.
The skateboard bowl is at Dias Beach, at the premises of The Surfer Kids non-profit organisation.
Facility
There was disappointment among Mossel Bay skateboarders when the skateboard facility at The Point fell into disrepair and disuse and there was nowhere for young people to skate.
Over the years residents have complained about skateboarders in the streets, endangering themselves, pedestrians and motorists.
Now, the new skateboard bowl at Dias will supply a need in the Mossel Bay community.
Constructed
It was constructed for the use of The Surfer Kids beneficiaries, but will be opened to the general public in a few weeks as a service to the public at a reasonable fee, and to generate funds to support the work The Surfer Kids does.
Chuma Magusha, employed by The Surfer Kids, speaks about the skateboard bowl in a video below:
The Surfer Kids NPO will manage the facility.
The NPO was founded in 2010 by Hermann Vivier and his wife Jenya Zhivaleva.
The organisation’s mission is to empower youth through character-building activities, with a primary focus on surfing, teaching children commitment and dedication through the sport.
Free surfing lessons
Children are given free surfing lessons and a meal in the afternoons at the premises.
They go there after school in the afternoons from JC Camp, the area around TM Ndanda School, on the hill above Louis Fourie Road.
The Surfer Kids does not yet have a definite date for the opening of the skateboard bowl to the public, but advises people to go to https:// bitcoinekasi.com/skate/, to find details on the opening "in the next few weeks".
