MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Station 15 of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in Mossel Bay helped rescue a 20-year-old man who was trapped on the rocks at The Point on Friday 29 August.
At about 16:00 that afternoon, the NSRI responded to eyewitness reports of a young man on the rocks, offshore of The Point, Mossel Bay, appearing to be in distress.
The man had found himself cut off from the mainland in the rising high tide.
According to André Fraser, Station 15’s coxswain, it became evident that the rocks the man was on would soon become engulfed by the tide.
Alongside the NSRI, the SAPS, Mossel Bay’s Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management teams, the Western Cape Government’s Health Emergency Medical Services and the Water Policing and Diving Services were activated.
Prepared with rescue ropes, an extra life jacket and additional protective equipment, the NSRI swimmers entered the waters.
They reached the man and secured him into the life jacket and protective gear. He was safely recovered and brought ashore.
It is believed he was suffering from hypothermia and was taken to the NSRI's rescue base where he was rewarmed, and later transported home.
