MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A new magistrate was appointed on a contract basis at the municipal court from February 2020.
This week magistrate Zuastrid Dyece was welcomed to Mossel Bay by the municipal manager, Advocate Thys Giliomee, the municipal court prosecutor Nanindi Slabbert and senior municipal officials.
The acting senior magistrate of the Mossel Bay Magistrate's court, Ludick Sass, and control prosecutor Pieter Dempsey were also present to welcome Magistrate Dyece to the municipal court bench.
The municipal court plays an important role in the community by ensuring compliance with municipal by-laws, as well as national and provincial legislation.
This is done by the successful prosecution of traffic-related offences received from the Provincial and Municipal Traffic departments, municipal by-laws and other delegated prosecutorial cases as per the Director of Public Prosecution under the general delegation issued to the Prosecutor of the Municipal Court. For the period October 2019 to 31 December 2019, 4 137 cases were placed on the court roll, of which 2 547 warrants of arrest were authorised for default payments and/or contempt of court.
Payments received on Traffic (Provincial and Municipal) and Municipal By-Law fines are paid to the Mossel Bay Council. Contempt of court fees ares paid over to the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development.
