MOSSEL BAY NEWS - During the open monthly Mossel Bay Town Council meeting held on Wednesday, 31 October, the ACDP brought an urgent motion before council regarding the situation at Harry Giddey Park.
The FF Plus and PA supported it.
In the motion, various questions about the animals and construction in the park were included, which the ACDP said had not been answered by the municipality or the Garden Route SPCA Mossel Bay branch.
The motion included the following:
- Neither the SPCA or the Mossel Bay Municipality has provided information on what specific disease the tortoises had.
- Were all ill? If not why were all euthanised?
- What will happen to all the other animals that were resident in the park?
- Is it true that a restaurant is planned for construction in the park?
- Only the top cages near Park Primary School were flooded and we see there is a concrete slab being thrown there at the moment. What is that for?”
Following a 10-minute caucus requested by the DA, feedback from the party was provided by the mayor, Dirk Kotzé.
He said the DA did not support the ACDP's motion. He did say, however, the DA had requested an investigation into the matter and official communication would be provided, as has been done thus far.
He said the construction in the park was solely due to damage caused by a storm and that rumours about "hotels or stuff" being built in the park were not the case.
